L'Alpe d'Huez

An extraordinary ski area

Alpe d'Huez is a winter sports resort in the Alps, located on the former mountain pastures of the village of Huez in the Isère department, 59 km from Grenoble. It is part of the Grandes Rousses massif, above the Oisans.

The Sun Island

Since 1936, Alpe d'Huez has developed at an altitude of 1860 metres on the Grandes Rousses massif: the Pic Blanc, culminating at 3330 metres, offers an imposing panorama, rated 3 stars in the Michelin Guide, over the Ecrins National Park and its prestigious summits, the Rateau, the Meije, the Muzelle, the Aiguilles d'Arves, the Belledonne range and the Mont Blanc.

A landscape covering almost 1/5th of the French territory, from Italy to the Massif Central. Alpe d'Huez, called the "Ile au Soleil", benefits from a generous amount of sunshine and a particularly active microclimate.

At 1 hour from Grenoble, and only 4 hours from Paris, Alpe d'Huez is a space of multiple activities to share with family and friends.

Around the villages of Auris-en-Oisans, Huez-en-Oisans, La Garde, Oz-en-Oisans, Vaujany, and Villard Reculas are the guarantors of mountain life. The roots of the "Gens d'en Haut" can be found here.

The traditions of the Oisans are expressed in the gastronomy and the rurality, present by the transhumance of some 370 cows and 2000 sheep that graze on the 10,000 hectares of pastures that become ski slopes in winter.

The reason for maintaining this tradition is twofold: the d'Huizats have from time immemorial grazed their flocks on these mountain pastures, giving the resort its name: the "alpe" of the village of Huez. But above all, these herds have an action of restoring the ski area by grazing. By clearing the wild grass, they prevent the grassy pile-up that is conducive to avalanches during the first snowfalls.
